Well, there were a variety of reasons, just like with anything else.

One major reason:
After WWII, the Cold War had already begun. The United States needed a foothold in Japan, which was both industrialized and conventiently located. So, after WWII, the US forced Japan into a strange relationship. Japan could no longer be armed, except for a bare minimum. The US took over the defense of Japan, which allowed the Japanese government to spend a lot more money rebuilding and pumping up the economy.

Also, after WWII, a lot of Japanese were sick of war - they had gone to war too many times without getting any sort of gains. Even when they won wars against China and Russia, the more powerful Western powers (like the US, Britain, etc) would force Japan to give back most of the territories they'd gained.

By the time the war ended, Japanese citizens were actually quite happy to see the war end. They were stretched for resources and food, so they were relieved. Japanese citizens welcomed the end of the war very much. The Japanese felt ashamed and embarrassed to lose, but there was actually not much animosity against the Americans who occupied Japan, because the United States began helping to rebuild when the war ended.

It was imposed on them by the occupying powers.

Also, the Japanese faced an unusually cold winter in 1945-46, and it took a monumental effort by the occupying powers--chiefly the U.S.--to keep them fed and warm.

That effort tended to keep people peaceful as it focused their attention on things other than conflict.

Japan was a nation of honor, and respect despite their fanatical leaders. They weren't full of lunatic terrorists willing to kill as many civilians as possible with bombs strapped to their chest.

"Kamikazee pilots = military targets, Suicide Bombers = civilian targets" BIG DIFFERENCE!
