You could make a collage out of them.
Glue some to picture frames, especially if you have pictures of your grandmothers sewing.
Glue to jars (with grout).

I have a great idea for you if you want to be able to enjoy them and see them every day rather than putting them away in a box somewhere. I was browsing around online one day and saw a picture of a bouquet of flowers made out of buttons. I thouhgt they were so cute I had to make my own!

All you need is floral wire and buttons. The directions are very simple, in fact, this was a craft project done on the PBS show Zoom. All you do is layer a couple of buttons together, bend your wire over and put it through two holes on both of the buttons and twist the two ends of the wires together to hold the buttons in place. (There are very well written directions at websites linked below.)

Beware though, you will probably want to choose some of the more run of the mill buttons because some of the more delicate ones may be damaged by the wire. Sandy and Pat are right - your buttons may very well be valuable and any damages will of course decrease their value.

Follow the links for pictures and directions and, whatever you decide to do with your buttons, enjoy them!

"other old material" ... there's Bakelite and there's pewter ....

First sort for the ones you really like. They can decorate something someday.

Sort the other by type. Sort the types into "sets". Mount notable odd buttons on cardboard.

You could just play with developing organization and display as a hobby. It *is* a hobby for some people.

Check out prices of new buttons at fabric and craft stores.

A simple purse or pouch with a nice button closure could be a gift or an item for sale or "trade goods". You have the buttons. :-)

I agree with Sandy, but I have a suggestion for the ones that may only be of value to you. Make a canvas ( or come other rather sturdy material) )bag or vest and completely cover it with the buttons. What a conservation piece!

You know, if they're that old, they may be worth some money. You might take them to an antique dealer and find out more about them. While the sentimental value is there, don't discount the monetary value.
