Buffalo is preparing for a long playoff run. Last year taught them a lesson about injuries during the playoffs. Since the Amerks have been eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs, the Sabres are free to make as many call-ups as they want (granted the team must own the rights to the players, the Florida Panthers also use the Amerks as a farm club). The Sabres have called up 11 players.

Think of this like football's taxi squad. The call-ups will practice with their big league counterparts so that the staff of the Buffalo Sabres can ease them into the system almost seamlessly. While the Amerks play a similar style to the Sabres, the feel, speed, and atmosphere of an NHL playoff experience is nothing like a run for the Calder Cup.

Lindy and the rest of the staff are not trying to re-invent the wheel for Game 5, they are just preparing for the worst case scenario.

There is no salary cap or roster limit for the playoffs. Once Rochester's season ended, the Sabres had the option of recalling as many players as they wanted to the big club on paper. So they brought up a dozen.

They will practice on their own and stay in shape, basically. Last year, the Sabres lost a bunch of players to injury on defense during the playoffs, and wound up using a few guys who had been in Rochester. Imagine what that would have been like if they had been sitting at home. Therefore, think of it as something of an insurance policy.

Rochester's out of their playoffs so they called up all of their players. As soon as the ECHL playoffs are over, they're calling up another goalie. Maybe they should put a few of the callups in the lineup and bench a few Sabres.

Rochester has been eliminated from the Calder Cup playoffs, so my best guess is that Buffalo wants these guys to at least practice with the team and get a small taste of the NHL playoff atmosphere without actually dressing for a game.

They will still have a very similar line-up as they have had all year. These call-ups are no big deal.
