I think that the asker should be able to designate the answer as "non-responsive" and then nobody can thumbs up or thumbs down on that answer. There should be 2 or 3 "thumbs down" categories -- as in -- Bad answer, non-responsive, disagree, and I don't like it. As an answerer, on a question I'm answering or one I would ask myself, I personally look at them when I don't understand an answer or it seems weird to decide if I want to look further or consider their answer any more. As an asker, I look at what the other community members think if it's an opinion question. So I do think it serves a purpose.

P.S. I'm still a newbie, so I only get to answer "so many" questions. So, if I'm at my limit and somebody has already said what I want to say, I do click the thumbs up; if I feel someone is giving bad advise, I thumbs down and star the question so I remember to answer it later.

I think the community should do the thumbing.

there are, as in any other aspect of life, examples of differing levels of quality among the answers (and, for that matter, with respect to the Q's as well). There is, for example, a bunch of sh!t like "tx for the 2pts" out there. This should be thumbed down. What is the alternative? When we see weak crap it is our responsibility to discourage it. I think that the thumbs are a vital part of the Answers experience.

If it's my question i give everyone a thumbs up most of the time.....unless the answer is hiddeous. On others I give thumbs up if the answer was really funny or witty. I only thumbs down if it extremely offensive.

I think everyone deserves a thumbs up for at least answering the question.

I think the thumbs down should only be used when you know a person's answer is wrong. Just doing it for the hell of it is annoying because I have gone and gotten information from multiple sources and still get thumbs down. Although, you can't expect everyone to be mature.

I think one of the things we should all be doing here is to point out to the powers to be at Yahoo, when some one is being way over the line with some of their answers, They can't see everything. I seldom use it, but when I do, I really mean it.
