Very true, but what I remember most was the 300 baud dial up modem. Hurry up and wait!!!

Chat in real time? If that's what you call 30 seconds of lag, yes.

ASCII art was big back then, too.

I began using Bulletin boards around 1985. That was before the Internet became popular. Your phone needed to be put in a modem-type holder where the signals were changed to communicate with the receiving line. The designs you talk about were the beginnings of emoticons ;-) and :==)), for happy and big nose happy. It wasn't long after that when the Internet mushroomed because Windows made it so simple. Can you remember at one time, we old-timers did everything with typed commands, we had no graphical interface. Here's an example, just for laughs.
If we wanted to go to another folder (directory) we needed to type in something like this:
CD (change directory)\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3
This would take us to Folder3.
Then we could type DIR/W/P to show us what was in that folder, \W (wide)so it would show in a wide format and \P (pause) so it wouldn't scroll off the screen. Usually any file that had an extension of .exe would be the file that wes executable.
Most people will find this hard to believe, but I still use DOS commands at times because it gives me POWER to do things you can't do in Windows as easily.

Bulletin Boards (BBS) were a completely different animal, and not to be confused with the internet. The internet back then I think was web pages and email. There was IRC but I think they were frequented by hackers etc. People use to make designs with characters but that still happens today as well.
