may i get a well defined description of both terms. i continue seeing both words multiple times in my philosphoy book but i cannot seem to differentiate them quite well. thank you

Egoism: 1 a : a doctrine that individual self-interest is the actual motive of all conscious action b : a doctrine that individual self-interest is the valid end of all actions
Egotism: b : the practice of talking about oneself too much
2 : an exaggerated sense of self-importance

Will a subtle definition make you a kinder person? Wouldn't it be more useful to ask, "what reason (logical) can you give for putting yourself first?"

Just for the contrast, look up "egolessness." Or "selflessness." Or even "satori" or "nirvana."
