Its an American term that comes up in tv shows occasionally. It conjures up images in my head. Is it a nurses aid? Is it the lady that helps kids across the school crossing? Is it a girl working behind the counter at an ice cream shop???

It's a young girl who volunteers at a hospital... My sister was one... She had to wear an outfit w/ red and white stripes that looked like a candycane (hence, the "candy" striper)

A candy striper is a young girl who volunteers at a hospital to take magazines, snacks, ect. to patients. It has nothing to do nurses aids. I am a CNA(certified nurses aide ) We are the nurses assistant, we wash, dress, walk, feed those who can't themselves, We report medical problems that need tended to.Sometimes we are just someone to talk to for the patient or their families. We help patients to the bathrooms, or clean up their messes when patients cant make it.In other words a CNA loves and respects their residents, and if you cant do that, then you need to be a candy striper.

That's what they used to call us when we volunteered out time at the local hospital...now they're called volunteers and no longer have to wear pink/red & white striped uniforms; now they wear smocks.
