I live in Australia and here we dont tip anyone in any profession, yet in other countries this seems to be a huge practice. Can someone just let me know do you always tip people such as your hairdresser, etc?
I am a Beauty Therapist and we along with hairdressers already earn enough money without tips.

Do people tip out of gratitude or just simply because it is expected?

Thanks guys for answering :)

I live in the US & tip because it is expected. I usually tip between 15-20% of the bill. I will leave a lower tip if the service is poor. I also leave over 20% if service is exceptional.

Wait staff in the US depend on tips so I feel obligated.

I generally tip anyone in the service industry - IF they deserve it. A 'good' average tip is 20 percent (25 if your doin OK). I used to serve tables, cocktail and bartend - even with my exceptional service, sometimes I'd get squat or maybe just a buck or two (on a table w/ a bill of $250, that's just insulting). Working for $2.13 in this day and age just doesn't cut it! Tips are expected and worked hard for.... (for the most part.) But, if I get really crappy service, I won't tip at all; instead I'll fill out the comment card, or I'll make my own comment card on the back of a receipt or napkin so they won't think I'm just cheap, they'll know if they make the customers visit worth while, then the customer will most likely make their job worth while.
(If the service is just average, I'll leave 15 percent without feeling guilty)
No one wants to pay extra for a bad haircut; they want the stylists' to make them look amazing! And if they do, showing your appreciation is just the courteous thing to do. And eating an appetizer after dinner is pointless, (I'd send it back, honestly)... or having to repeatedly ask for another drink is just annoying.
Its all about service. If your happy, make them happy.

people tip those that are doing them a service they themselves can do but don't want to do themselves such as cooking, grooming etc. the amount varies but is usually 20 percent of the bill for food service and between 2-10 dollars for the grooming depending on what is done and how satisfied you are with the service. these professions here do not get more than minimum wage and depend on the tips for their income. i disagree with the whole tipping thing as we all are doing someone a service no matter what field we are in and most professions don't get tipped like a cashier or receptionist even tho they are doing a service as well.

I start w/ 20%. they make a mistake or forget something down to 15%, make 2 mistakes or forget two things,- 10 %, if they are talking to others to much and not doing their job - 5%
If everything taste great or my hair looks great back to 20% and all is forgiven
