WWI changed world history in three major ways. First it effected the Russian Revolution and had their been no war, Russia may have had a revolution whereby the Communist Party wasn't the dominant party after the revolution.

It also broke up Austrian Hungarian Empire and the Turkish Empire.

Hungary, Chezkoslovokia, Romania and all the other Balkan countries gained their independence from Austria and Italy gained back part of it's territory that it was forced to cede to the Austrian-Hungarian Empire about three hundreds before the war and was inhabited by mostly German speaking peoples.

As for the Turkish Empire a large part of the middle east fell into British hands. They were left the uneviable task of drawing the borders for newly independent countries.

The whole area was one big colony for so long there had been a lot of movement of peoples within the area. There was no easy way to determine where the borders should go.

So the British drew the borders of countries where they had existed during Biblical times even though during biblical times they were seperate ethnicities with different cultures, traditions and languages. They gave independce to the area by drawing the borders for Iraq, Iran, Syria, Transjordan and Libya if I remember correctly. Arabian independence was delayed for some years because of a dispute with France who wanted Arabia as a colony. What their justification for making such a claim was, I don't remember.

Which was "the Great War." That title has been applied to several wars though out European history. If you're talking about WW2, it was the first war where the peace and future stability was prized beyond putative treaties and land expansion. It ushered in a new era of multilateralism (Bretton Woods organizations [World Bank, IMF, IFC], the UN, the OAS, etc. were all products of the era).

WW 1 or WW 2 ? Dosn't matter. Let's see, could it be that for 5 or 6 years every nation with an Army, came to the Continent to kill as many people and destroy as much property as possible??? With every weapon they could ever think of???
WW II.20,000,000 Russions killed, Germany destroyed?
WW I. The first use of chemical weapons? Oh Yeah. And Germany Destroyed.
