I have heard several speculative explanations myself, as to what is actually in the briefcase, but the Marsailles Wallace 'soul' theory seems to stand out in my mind, as being the most interesting and poignant.

Look at all the pieces involved in this speculation...

You recall the band-aid on the back of Marsailles Wallace's neck??? Many biblical references reportedly dictate that when the devil takes your soul, he removes it from the back of your head. Now, if you recall, the combination of the briefcase is '666', and when anyone opens up the case, a brilliant, overwhelming light cascaded from it.

Is it possible that inside the case was Wallace's soul, and perhaps he was trying to buy it back??? The three kids in the apartment, who had the case (including ol' 'Flock 'o' Seagulls') were the devil's couriers; when one of the kids flew out of the bathroom, and fire a 'hand cannon' at Jules and Vincent, all of the bullets 'missed' them. "God came down and stopped these M/F bullets", because they were here to save Wallace's soul, hence the 'devine intervention' cognigtation.

An interesting speculation, to say the least, but as I said before, most poignant, would you say???

A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or Maguffin) is a plot device that motivates the characters and/or advances the story, but has little other relevance to the story.

Like the case in the movie 'Ronin'..the contents of the case are not important...just the characters and the story.

The briefcase in the movie Pulp Fiction is a MacGuffin.

I'm with Zholla on this one ......It's a Mc Guffin.

The entirety of the movie is drawn on fear or trepidation of the Marcellus Wallus character..

It's the lives of the characters that orbit the McGuffin that create the movie.
Another McGuffin type is the biblical quotations used in the dialogue , all for not?

i have the collectors edition with commentary from tarantino and he says "its what ever u want it to be."

so therefore, he couldnt think of anything and it has no relevance. he just tried to hype up the plot a bit. bring more suspense and attention to the movie. and apparently it worked didnt it?

LOL and i just have to add, it also says on the special edition dvd that ving rhames has a nasty scar on the back of his neck so the makeup girl put a bandaid over it for lack of a better solution.
LOL pull his soul out of his neck? WHAT?

It's speculated to be Marceillus Wallace's soul, pulled from the back of his neck (that's why the bandage is there) although no official explanation is given.
