As a general rule, guys strongly resist going to any kind of counseling, thinking it's a sign of weakness...or feeling that nobody can really tell them anything new about relationships. The truth is, everybody can use some counseling, and every couple can use counseling, no matter how strong their relationship may be. And yes, counseling can save marriages. And save lives. And save relationships. And save families. I'm a counselor. I've seen it happen.

My wife and I are on a permanent retreat. Everyday is a day to count our blessings and everyday is an opportunity to learn more about living with and loving each other. There is a therapeutic aspect to a couples retreat and the lessons learned there are lessons any couple should discover and bring home. I think of it as a personal growth class for couples and doesn't require that the couple subscribes to any specific religion or philosophy. In my former role as a counsellor I used to teach relaxation and assertiveness, which were part of a total package in a therapuetic community. It was always about a healthy personality, a healthy lifestyle and treating people with respect. You would probably find that you have most of these attributes and skills but I think it's a worthwhile venture (or adventure) and I'm sure you will find it will enhance the quality of your life.
