I think when people are moving into a new place, the men should be the ones doing the lifting of the boxes and moving the furniture inside, while the women fix lunch for everyone and do the unpacking and putting away of things. I would go into an explanation of why but I think it is all pretty obvious.

That would sure be nice. However a single woman does not always have that option does she? Not all women are so lucky. The one thing women should do is pack the breakables. Men, generally, tend to be a tad cavalier about breakables.

The last time I moved, I had my daughters and their guys do the sofa and heavy stuff but I still did most of the of work. Then the unpacking took a few weeks.

Yes I think men should do most of the heavy stuff, but in truth, women are not that weak. Everyone just moves what they can manage. When it is time to eat, take a break and go share a pizza or something that leaves no dishes. By the way, who is looking after the children or are they at Grandma's?

Generally speaking, men are more efficient at lifting boxes and furniture during a move. However, there are some women that are quite capable of doing the heavy work. It depends on the woman. Some would prefer to make lunch for everyone, and some would rather do the moving. If the situation comes up, ask the woman what she would prefer to do. If everyone was helping with the move, the work gets done quicker anyway, and it's easy to just order a pizza or something.

I don't think women should be doing any kind of hard labor at all...besides carrying light grocery bags when there is no man available.
I thinking fixing a nice lunch and some cool lemonade (or whatever the men would like to drink or eat) is a great way for women to help out!
unpacking some light objects and putting them away would be good also but they definitely shouldn't me moving around heavy pieces of furniture.
XOXO

I've helped my brother move 3 times in the past 12 months. And I constantly help friends and family move. I do what I can, but due to some back issues, I usually have to back out early. But there is nothing wrong with a woman moving boxes. We're not made of glass ,you know. It's 2007. A woman's place is NOT barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen! LOL!

Now that's hilarious, Sandy baby. When we have moved, my husband and his friends do all the heavy lifting and I'm cooking up a storm in the kitchen so everyone can sit down afterward and have some great food, a few beers, and some conversation. I wouldn't have it any other way because I love to cook, I love food, and I love getting compliments on my cooking. This was never planned, it just sort of happened that way. I make a killer lasagna. You like Italian, Sandy baby?

That's nice you would think so kindly of women, but I have been dealing with a flooded basement for the past week, and I personally moved over 300 boxes, all the furniture, and took up the soaking wet carpet, and yes, I would have loved to have had some help, but when you really need it, no one is around!

With all the times I've moved or helped others move, it's always the women who are doing the majority of the work. If we women waited for the men to do the heavy lifting, I'd still be in the process of moving from 8 years ago.

I don't want the men to do all the work, but if they offer to help, I'd actually like to see them help rather than stand on the sidelines "supervising".

My philosophy when it comes to moving: you want it done right, do it yourself.

That is a double standard. You are saying that women should be in the kitchen while men do all the hard work. Women fought for equal rights, let them help move furniture right along side the men.

Allowing??! Both men and women can help with lifting boxes and furniture, fixing lunch and unpacking! I would think that this is very obvious!

That sounds about right. Men should lift the heavy furniture and women could unpack stuff. And they could both make lunch!! :)
