I mean, the team who is shooting the ball should be given the right to score however they can. If the first person misses the shot a 2nd person should be able to tip it in regardless of where the ball is.

To the first answer, no, that doesnt make any sense. Defensive goal tending is totally different because there is a shot blocker introduced into the scenario. You shouldnt be able to block a shot on its way down.

To the second answer, well, not really because the first person missed the shot anyway, the second person who made the tip actually made the shot and should accordingly get the credit in points.

I guess im seeing it differently because if a defensive player goes up to block the shot on its way down, hes late. That creates an unfair advantage because then anyone can jump up way after the shot was taken and block the ball from all sides. that makes no sense to me. A good, valid defensive play would be to block the shot on its way up (a true block), anything else is a poor defensive play.

Alright, I guess people are mis-understanding. Especially the last answerer. Dont you realize there is such a thing as defense? If you were playing defense you wouldnt allow all the offensive players to go for the rebound. There is such a thing as boxing out dude. And if they all went up the defensive players could go up as well and then there is the issue of fouls....

Why should they get an advantage that the defense can do nothing against?

it either has to be no goaltending like it used to be, or both sides being allowed to touch the ball after it hits the rim like international rules

The question-asker hasn't thought this out clearly.

If you allow offensive goaltending and not defensive, all teams would have to do is throw the ball up near the rim.

Once it's in the cylinder, rebounders could crash the boards and shove the ball back in the hoop, and defenders would be able to do nothing.

Imagine, the ball is rolling around on the rim, and the offensive player is allowed to shove it back in while the defender has to sit and watch him helplessly. You're not making sense.

No. Why should the offensive player be able to touch the ball when the defensive player isn't allowed to? It means the defender can't really defend.

Yeah i see your point about the regular season, but i like the rule if you score a TD in OT then you win automatically because if you are in OT you should play defense..but i do like how its not just a field goal anymore cause 95% of the time the team who wins the coin toss wins the game

No because then they would have to get rid of defensive goal tending. because they would no longer be able to block the shot. see what i'm getting at?

it probably has more to do with statistical accuracy than anything else. i mean, it would take point credits away from one person and give them to another person who really didn't contribute to the shot.

well, it's legal in international play, and other parts of the world don't seem to mind it. so yea, why not?
