I would say three basic things:
1) Desperation
2) Fear
3) Charisma
In the late 1920's and early 1930's the German people were in a desperate situation and were anxious for a leader that could help them out of their situation. The German economy was in ruins after WWI, the government was in chaos, and much of the public infrastructure was still in a state of repair. Hitler promised them a way out.
Hitler also played on the peoples fear - namely of the communists and Jews. In many of his speeches, he talked about the "enemies among us" and was able to use this to convince the people that he would be their protector.
Hitler personally was a very charismatic person and an excellent orator. The people loved his speeches and were convinced that the would lead Germany back to prosperity. It wasn't until the late 30's that people begin to realize what he really was. But of course by then it was too late.

The signing treaty of Versials signified the end of WW1. It also spelt poverty and shame for many Germans. The Gold in Fort Knox was built up due to reparations paid by the Germans in post WW1. Also, the terms of the surender carved up German teritory and basically ensured poverty.
The failure of the post war German Govt. to deal with this, as well as its hyper inflationary policies in suport of the Rhure strike, opened the floodgates for Hitler. He offered the German people the chance to break free of the terms of the treaty, offering wealth and an glorious new age. He even offered a handy scape goat and target for German anger and frustration in the form of the Jews.
Mien Kampf outlined his vision of the future. It was bright, glorious and promised a new dawn, the building of the third empire.
How did Hitler get into power? We put him there.
Luck

Part of Hitler's success was that he gave the people what they wanted and needed to hear. The treaty of Versailles weakened Germany considerably and he preyed on people's sense of pride in the Fatherland it gain support and regain Germany's strength.

The cause of Fascism, in my opinion, is...
It's leftover tribal leader inheritance...it was the 1st (and worst) kind of government...
And as far as Hitler (god, I hate even discussing that dude...)
I don't see any "success..."
