Well, I graduated from high school back in the dark ages - 1958. I received 350.00 from different people as a graduation present...
I bought a 1950 Ford Coupe for 200.00. I spent about 75.00 to have the head and tail lights wired - the horn wired and brakes put on.
This was the ugliest car..but I loved it! It was completely painted with grey primer and had no grill. There were rusted holes in the floorboard under my feet that we covered with tin can lids and screwed them down real tight..then put a floor pad over them. The muffler had a hole in it that someone else had already covered with a tin can lid ---- it made for a wonderful sound when you accelerated.
There was no back seat but we didn't care. My girlfriends and I threw a mattress back there and my mother contributed a coupla old pillows.. The "back seat" was always full of clothes, makeup and stuff like that.
This car had been run in the stock-car races in southern California and whoever ran it had dropped a 4 cylinder GMC truck engine under the hood......it was the fastest dam car in town - ugly as it was. The boys loved to drive it.
My girlfriends and I spent the whole summer and fall racing around the valley where we grew up terrorizing small children and animals - and not a few adults with this ugly, loud, fast growling machine.
By December, I had decided to join the Marine Corp and was going to be sent clear across the country to Parris Island. I gave the car to my oldest brother (he was only 14 at the time)..my mother would let him run it around on the back roads. He finally sold it a coupla years later for $50.00 - he joined the Army.
Since then, I have had many cars - fine ones, new ones, fancy ones....even the one I own now (I call it Little Skippy - and love it)...but I'll tell ya, nothing I have ever owned could match the romance and adventure of that 1950 Ford!!

1964 Chevelle SS, I paid 450dollars. It needed paint, but the body and chrome were excellent. Saved some money, and painted it pearl essence white, with several coats of clear coat. Raced well from a roll, but traction was an issue starting off the line.
