If the daycare accepts subsidies from the state, they probably have no choice. Not accepting a child with a handicap, whether mental or physical would probably be considered discrimination.
I agree with the others. Biting at this age is normal behavior for a lot of kids. When your child is in daycare, injuries can happen. My son got punched in the face by one of the little angels because he was playing with a toy the other one wanted. While it isn't right and as parents we feel angry, there isn't much that can be done.

Biting is very common when children fight and if all children who bite were removed from daycare, they would go out of business. However my children have encountered a small number children who attack other children viciously and unprovoked, but I have not noticed any correlation with mental retardation, many of them were quite smart. By focusing on the fact that the child is mentally retarded you are missing the important point of whether the attack was unprovoked.

I believe that they should still be allowed in the daycare with all the other children, just more closely monitered. Children DO bite and lick and pull hair and all that fun stuff at young ages, retarded or not. However, if someone was paying closer attention to these children, they may not be harming others.

I work in such a facility, although privately owned. To isolate children by intelligence or 'label' is more harmful than protective. We meet all manner of people in out day - to -day lives. We start learning to cope with that early on. If we are never exposed to differences we may never learn to accept them. In my class I have all levels from very slow to very advanced. They all understand that each is different and with proper monitoring (note the monitoring part), I've never had any real issues. Honestly, I was picked on, hit and abused in school more by students with no diagnosed problems than the other way! Does that mean we have special rooms for ADD here, ADHD here, Autism here, etc...?

Two year olds bite.... Wether or not they are mentally retarded. It is a phase they go thru. Maybe his disability has something to do with a part of it, but that is still a part of being 2.

I was older than 2 when I stopped biting people. I'm not retarded.

I am happy you are so honest...its takes a lot of courage to voice one's opinion as honestly as you did. Some people might think it is cruel. But torturing yourself and in turn the kid with neglect when u know first hand that you do not have the patience to take good care of the kid is even more cruel - to yourself and the kid. Good or bad, cruel or kind is always a relative term. People who judge you are not living your life. It is easy for them to judge, harder for you to live up to their expectations. You are not cruel, you are a very practical, wise for your age, honest and brave person. Please do not change.
