I helped a friend buy a car and loaned him $1000. He paid $300 to me but has since changed his mobile phone number, job, and moved house so I am unable to contact him! I saw him out at a bar and he said he would pay, but I have still not heard from him in 6 months.

What course of action can I take to get the money back?

Is it worth taking civil action or will that cost more than it's worth?

To take any effective action you are going to have to find him to give him the papers that start court action.

If you win in small claims court, he will have to pay your court costs which I think are $25-$50. So take him to court.

You could, by law, repossess his car. Or take him to small claims court. In most states, a verbal contract is legal and binding in a court of law.
