Before the heart and the mind comes the goal of life. If you fix a goal in life... all matters of heart would become clear. It is only when we delay fixing a goal in life... problems crop up. Once you have fixed a goal in life... go after it with bulldog determination. Have you ever witnessed magnificent display of will power exercised by Margaret Thatcher... the iron Lady (ex-prime minister of the UK)!
It is the bulldog determination of Winston Churchill that wins the day. Once you have a settled goal in life... you also have a career. Based on the goal of life... it is simple to set a career in life. Do something that is dear to your heart. The sweet small voice of your soul atman within would always prompt you on the right path. Follow the path of absolute truthfulness if you desire to hear the sweet small inner voice of your soul atman.
Fix a goal in life... a career, a profession that is truly dear to our heart... something you love working round-the-clock. I know we do not have choices sometimes but do not bog down in the journey of life... one always wins the end! Once we have fixed a goal in life, have chosen a profession of our liking... settle down in life with your soul mate... the love of your life! Things are not that difficult as they seem to be!
When I started in search of God at 13 years of age... I was a complete loner! No one to guide... the path unknown... I simply had to maintain the balance in life! I do not remember how many times I had to eat the hell for breakfast. 25 years further... I finally realized God in 1993. I reached the end of my cosmic life... this is my last manifestation... the 8.4 millionth! I can but gain entry into the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism) after I leave my mortal frame in this life. Glory is to God Almighty! Read up on Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myth. He talks about following your heart, your bliss. By instinct, inherently you already know it inside - hard not to know. There will be times when you have to make fork in the road decisions and at that point, you decide which path to take. Not sure if taking one path over the other just to avoid regret is the appropriate way to make that decision but in some cases, I have done that to overcome fear. Some people will avoid following their heart for a variety of reasons, to avoid hurting others, to avoid fear, to avoid facing difficulties. Others take it head on.
A relative risked financial ruin to do what they loved. It was difficult at first but now financial returns are triple and the benefits and perks are amazing. If you do what you love go for it. And the other bit of advice is that as far as love life - don't wait until its too late. I've had too many of those last minute airport scenes. Don't do it, just go for it. Life is too short. Ten years will pass you by in a heartbeat. Have fun.

My heart pumps blood. Following "the heart" is an illusion and a delusion.
Many things in life we have no control over. In many situations though, our lives are the result of the choices that we can and do make.
People who are driven by emotion suffer more and are overall less happy in life.

Listening to your heart is a wrong measure for logic; especially in matters of love, career, and means of living where in-depth consideration is required.
All along the heart has been dwelling on emotion, the fundamental for flimsy reasoning, leading to possibly regrets, misfortune, and even danger to oneself. On this rationale, the use of heart to resolve matters can be regretful and end in repercussion. Using cognition is more appropriate than relying on the heart for decision.

following your heart is anything but delusional. to follow your heart, you must do what makes you happy. but it has to be something you love unconditionally. for instance, with a job, you won't always look forward to going to work. but if you follow your heart, you will be doing something you love to do no matter what. so when the work is hard or you're stressed, you can still reach into your heart for the strength to get the job done. in a relationship, if you follow your heart, when the going gets tough and you clash at times, or you argue, or have a falling out, you will stick it out and see it through because it's something that makes you happy even when you're not happy.

You have to know that you aren't sure where you are going when you set out.
You try what seems best, and if it doesn't work then you try something else.
And It means realizing that your path is not determined by ease, money, time constraints. Deciding what is practical has no place in following your heart, making it practical is all you need to do.

There is an easy way to do that.
Think only the thoughts that can be frankly said out if anybody asks 'what are you thinking?'. Just do the things with full of love as the base. Take steps to stop cheating yourself.

you have to follow your heart, or forever you will be unsettled, but you also have to use your mind. your heart usually is your instinct, but you have to use your brain to think about the future and what would be right and most benifitial in the long run.
