Ok so I know the motions and have been able to somersault on one spot. But when swimming up to a wall and going into a turn I get all sideways and its just pathetic!
Can anyone recommend anything to improve the flip turn at this basic level??? For example, do you suggest I viciously go into the turn or just roll into it gently.
Thanks!!!

Sometimes having someone in the water to help you works wonders. If you have someone else (who knows what they are doing and that you trust, like a coach or fellow teammate) stand at the wall and "direct" your turn you will feel a difference. If you've ever sene gymnastics practice or beginning tumbling you will often see a coach "guide" a flip or handspring by actually placing their hands on the person who is flipping and "guiding" them around. Having someone place their hands on your body as you come into the turn and guiding you around and out can really help. I do this with my 8-and-unders once a season to help them get the feel of the turn and they say that it helps.

If you're not into that, go into it slow and concentrate. Make sure you are flipping straight and can see the bottom of the pool and then up the wall before you pull out. Ensure your feet and planted solidly and you're not all helter-skelter with your arms. Maintaining a streamline will help your rotation stay smooth and keep your body on course rather than allowing it to veer off at an angle. Make sure you are not pulling out of the turn too early, a lot of siwmmers end up sideways because they are going at it too fast. Slow down, good technique fosters speed so work on getting the technique right and the speed will come ( =

If nothing else, get a coach or teammate to evaluate your turn. Alot of information can be garnered from someone who sees your turn from the outside of the pool and they might be able to help you improve.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I had trouble with this at the beginning too. You HAVE to have enough momentum to spin without turning to the side

I always had my eyes open so that I could see the wall coming, then when I got to it, I could see me turning, following the wall down to the floor, and once I was at a 45 degree angle to the floor, I would kick of the wall and spin, so that I was facing downwards

The first couple times I rammed myself into the floor...haha.

I wish you luck, youll get it.

Just practice....

that's usual to hesitate each and every from time to time on a turn turn, quite while you're no longer confident on your turn. It fairly hurts once you throw your heels up on the deck! once you have perfected your turn, you ought to push difficult into the wall making waiting for the turn, yet on the commencing up you're able to desire to get your stroke/distance/timing down. commence swimming into the wall and basically prepare flipping your hips and legs over and get in touch with the wall. basically bypass that some distance until you're comfortable with how many strokes you're able to desire to hit the wall basically suited. Then artwork on "popping" off the wall which contain your push off. you're able to desire to leap off the wall like a ball hitting the pavement. After that, confirm you're stretching out long and tight underwater as you push off. carry your streamline as long because it takes you to rotate directly to your abdomen, then commence the dolphin kicks to hold you to the outdoors. once you're approximately to floor, commence the flutter kick and take your first stroke with the arm opposite the section you generally breathe on. it could take a while and prepare, yet a brilliant turn will keep those useful fractions which could positioned you past to your opposition interior the top.

first start off slow and if you ask some of the advanced swimmers they can help too. but eventually you'll get the hang of it. just watch the wall and then put your head down like a sumersault and kick off the wall. it will feel amazing once you master it, but just keep practicing.
