If you are a young parent, you are just more aware.
Everyone else knows already and for some time, it is
just getting worse.

Yes the world is getting worse. No we are not becoming more aware of our surroundings. Last week was Earth Day so on the environmental front we have been bombarded with gloom and doom give it a couple weeks everyone will forget again. (Like when there was that rash out break of shark attacks a few years ago) Same with criminal problems when the media makes a big fuss about something then everyone tries to jump on the bandwagon for a story and how it relates to you in your home. Fear sells.
I remember when I was in school being told that eventually the sun will get larger and pull the Earth into it and I remember that lecture because of the fear it enforced even tho it was millions of years in the future. But, do you think I can remember what side of the aluminium foil to put on the outside when cooking potatoes?

Just more aware. We have so much media coverage that we did not have before telling us how bad it is on the other side of the world! When there was only a newspaper to read, you'd hear only select reports on things around the country that were wired into the news room. There was only so much room in a newspaper to print. Now we have satelites to link us up to every bomb attack, every crazy car chase, every word a mad man utters. The exposing of private lives, and the commentaries of those exposed.

On September 11, 2001- I was tickling my 3 year old and having a lovely day. I washed the dishes and made my bed with a new quilt. I wish I never owned a t.v. or a phone. Because what could have remained a beautiful day, turned into a day of sobbing and prayer with tears.

I really hate to admit it but I think the world is getting worse and they are making us more aware of our surroundings. So I guess it is a little of both.

The world has always been bad. We now just have ways to broadcast how horrible it is from anywhere in the world.

Edit: I dont see how people think the world is getting worse. Look at the past. We had world wards, the crusades, witchhunts, poor healthcare, rampant slavery (there is still slavery today but many countries have turned away from it), women had no rights anywhere, deathrate was high, short lifespan, horrible justice systems and so much more.

Today we have wonderful and growing health care (we arent going to automatically die from the flu), our lifespans are long, there are wars but we now can voice our disaproval and attempt to do something about it, women are equal in many countries now, the justice system isn't HANG HANG HANG, many places are religiously tolerant now, and so much more. There is still evil and bad things but if anything it's getting better.

very interesting philosophical question! Is the world getting worse BECAUSE we are more aware of our surroundings? My theory is that the media reports waaay more violence and tragedy than used to be reported - media is in the middle of bad news almost immediately and can actually send images to our tv in seconds or even in real-time. This makes us more aware of bad things already going on... however, it is possible that some people become desensitized and think that crimes might be okay? Could the media actually be "stimulating" the criminal brain to go out and commit more crimes?

What with the internet and television, things get out faster and go faster around
the world. The world is definitely getting worse. It's something that we can't get
away from. I also think that since 9/11 we are more aware of what is going on.

Both ... but there's a difference between being aware of your surroundings and being spoon-fed the national news.

Our biggest problem is human over population.
We're the 10,000 rats in the 6' x 6' cage, darl'n ...
We defecate on our food and in our water, eat our young, and systematically and without conscience destroy our intellect and environment.

So, yes the world is getting worse.
But just because there are eyes everywhere, doesn't mean "we" digest what is actually happening in the world.
Being "aware" is actually understanding the machine of society.

I think that there are a lot of people in this world who have little regard for others, but that has always been so.
I believe that with news being broadcast practically as it happens from anywhere in the world, we are much more aware of all the bad things that occur.

No we are not just more aware, The world is getting worse. The only thing we can do do stop it is make radical changes in our law enforcement. Criminals do not fear the system. It may sound radical but i really believe that we need to start putting some bullets in heads and stop coddling the criminals. first offense drunk driving gets 5 years, Rapist get put in prisons with other rapists, No TV, no weights, no visits, let them live in tents and feed them exactly what our soldiers eat, If it is good enough for our soldiers it is good enough for them

I think it is actually getting worse. When I was a child serial killers could be counted on one hand. There was never more than one guy in your town that the kids had to stay away from. Hitchhiking was still safe. You could leave your door unlocked and never had to worry about it. There was no possibility that you or your animals would die from eating food you bought from the grocery store. It was so different when I was a kid in the 50's.
