using train, or other transportation where train is not available

to put a starting point let say it is Athens or Thessaloníki

You can go there by car and bus. Any bus that goes from Athens to Thessaly, Macedonia or Thrace goes through there. Any bus from Salonika to Athens goes past it too.

The train passes close to the area but I am not sure it stops there.

There is a monument for the Spartans but if you think it is like the movie you will be disappointed. The terrain has changed since then and the sea is now 5-6 km from the foot of the mountain.

It's easy to go, as the other answers said, but there's not much to see there. A statue of Leonidas by the motorway, and that's all. However, if you are thinking about travelling to Greece, there are many archaeological sites and amazing monuments to visit elsewhere, not to mention the sea and the nice holidays you can have in general.

it's so easy sweety!!!
many of the buses that they go to Thessaloníki or to other cities at the north area of Greece they pass from there!!!
