It just seems like all they do is swiftly talk semi-melodically. And any individual, (given he/she does not have a speech impediment), could accomplish this. I just don't get this genre.

I am not trying to offend anyone..but is there something I'm missing? Does it require talent?

I personally think it does. I mean, they rap pretty fast right? Like if you tried to just on a rap song you know well without the songs playing, it's difficult. It requires some beat, and it depends on who the artist is really, like if they want to add some singing vocals to the rap. The songs need to be catchy too, so if the rapping and the lyrics aren't exactly right, it can just wreck the whole song. Hope this helped.

The ability to construct raps with large sets of rhyming syllables is considered a sign of intelligence and achievement. Making a distant word with similar sounds at some points sound like a rhyme isn't as easy as many think. Wordplay shows skill,(Wordplay include double entendres, alliteration, and all forms of playing around with your words) but the message of a rap is more important. A rapper who talks about nothing with excellent wordplay doesn't show as much skill as one who has a message, because his or her creativity has no frame around it. The message can be about one's life, about politics, about philosophy, about bragging, and anything with meaning. Rapping is not talking fast, it requires metronome, beat, poetry, tempo, and rhythm. All of these are aspects of music, henceforth, rap is music. Creating music takes talent, henceforth, rap takes talent.

in basic terms because a form would not require singing or contraptions, which an outstanding variety of hip-hop has a number of, does no longer recommend it calls for no skills. in my opinion, lots of the splendid lyricists in rap are lots of the splendid lyricists ever.

i think freestyle rapping requires talent because you have to think ahead of yourself. i think rap does have to have talent. but it seems that all these rappers are taking it for granted.. like lil jon and pit bull.. they are mass producing beats that people like with crappy lyrics.. and no one seems to care cuz they like the beat.. i think crappy rappers are whats making it seem like rap has no talent.. i mean, come on.. can ANYONE write a great poem? i dont think so.. its basically the same thing.. with a chorus

i'm not really a fan of rap, but rhyming and rhythm takes talent...whether you enjoy it or not....for most people, just turning off the t.v. takes talent....i guess what i mean, is that creating a song takes talent just in and of itself...there's a lot of word-crafting, poetry, if you will in rap....and a lot of rhythm...i don't like much of it, but i'd still say it's a talent....

good rapping requires talent. rapping in general, not so much. my standards of good rapping are meaningful lyrics (more than just 'bitches and ho's') as well as the requisite rap style- as you said, coherent, swift, semi-melodic speaking. but i require meaningful lyrics and coherent singing/speaking for any genre- 'bitches and ho's' doesn't cut it in rock or country style either.

very, very, very, very, very little talent. Little to no singing talent, the rest of the music is just sampled drum beats that just repeat the same few measures over and over.

I think that it has some kind of talent to it, but NOTHING compared with good normal singing.
