Not all resumes need a cover letter. BUT attaching a cover letter to a resume makes it more professional. Since cover letters are individualized to the company your applying for, this is your chance to make a great first impression (on paper) to the company who's looking to hire you.

A cover letter with an explanation of your objectives is best, but you could list your objective at the top of your resume.

If you are sending it by email, just write a brief summary of your qualifications to make the receiver want to open the attachment.

Cover letter is important. Keep it brief. A cover letter will catch the potential employers attention. Don't over do the cover letter, keep it brief and to the point.

It will look more "professional" if you send a cover letter. They aren't absolutely needed, but if it comes down to you and 1 other person and candidates, and he/she has a cover letter they will most likely get the position.

Anybody can just stuff a resume into an envelope. And they will see you did just that and nothing more. Stuff an resume into an envelope.
