There is nothing so Victorian in attitude as the image of a clipped and controlled lawn. Man's conquest over the elements exemplified in the garden. The push mower was patented during Victoria's reign.
Why not consider returning this patch to a natural habitat. There are reputable wild flower growers who premix blends for specific regions.
This will require some preparation to rid yourself of the grass either by tilling or by smothering. To smother lay out paper, newspaper, grocery bags or cardboard. Mulch with compost. Seed this and grow a meadow. Water & feed as needed.

See these sites for lawn alternatives.

Nongrass lawns
Lawn alternatives such as chamomile, thyme or clover lawns attract bees and other wildlife but still have the impact of a vista.
Low, shrubby, native ground covers might work especially if you combine a simple trio for slight variations in color texture and height.

Alot depends on what type of grass you have, for example have you ever seen a field of grass-Kentucky Bluegrass, farmers cut it for hay, it looks great when its blowing in the wind, well alot of lawns use Kentucky Bluegrass.
However, they also use other grasses. Do you have weeds? Or when it grows alittle taller, do you see any wild flowers? Some plants are more controlling than others, like mint will take over wherever it is allowed.

To me there is nothing like a trimmed neat healthy lawn, maybe around the outside of the property there could be grasses and wild flowers, but when a house has tall grass around it, it just looks unkept or not cared for.

But then again- I am a landscaper---

It will look like weeds and nobody lives there!!

However, there is NO LAW that says you have to have a front lawn (especially if you do not use it much).

If you really don't want a front lawn, I suggest that you find some perennial plants, ground covers or wild flowers to plant in your front yard. Pick something that goes well with your house and your backyard landscaping!

Good Luck!!

Depends on the type of grass and if you like weeds. Your neighbors might not appreciate it.
