I dont think you necessarily HAVE duties. With our family, if your the Godmother or Godfather, you promise to take care of your Godchild if the parents pass away. Kinda like a second gaurdian I guess.

Well the real meaning of a godfather is to take care of the child if anything ever happened to the parent. But basically its being another parent or to help raise the child if needed..

Well from an Orthodox Christian standpoint and as a new godmother myself, it involves being there for her spiritually, physically, emotionally...almost like a second parent really. Show her the right way, always try to be there for the her and keep close contact with her so she knows you are there for her no matter what. Congrats on becoming a godparent, it is such a wonderful journey!

IMO.... if your friend dies in an tragic accident.... and the girl has no other immediate family.... you should be willing to take care and responsibility of the girl's welfare. Not just seen her turfed in to an orpahanage with no money.... but to actively see she is protected and brought up decently.
That's how I look at the responsibilities involved. To me it is a serious undertaking. However I'm not sure if you are legally obliged to do any of that.

Not much really. Unless your friend dies. Then you are expected to step up and take care of the kid, or at least be willing to. Likely the extended family would take priority.
