I just purchased a Siamese Fighting Betta Saturday past. I have made certain to keep him isolated in a nice sized bowl away from extremes (heat, cold, noise).

I also purchased Betta-Min food.

I have sprinkled food into the bowl and he doesn't seem eager to eat. I will walk away and come back and he still hasn't eaten. I normally have to clean the food particles out of the bowl after a few hours. I am not sure if he is just eating what he wants and leaving the rest. It's been like this since Saturday.

Is it possible that the Betta is going through some sort of depression after being taken from the Pet Shop? I know that they are typically animals that are content with solitude...but I think this one is lonely.

It often takes a fish several days to adjust to new surroundings and this may well be the case for your fish. Also, as you mention, he may be eating but not as much as you are giving him. Try only placing a very few pieces of food in the bowl and coming back to see if he ate those.

Even if the bowl is out of extremes in temperature it could also be that the bowl is too cool for him. He need a steady temperature of about 75-85 to be very active and hungry.

Hope that helps and feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Bettas are fairly inactive fish - hence they don't eat large portions. As others have suggested do a few pellets so you can be sure he's not eating anything. If that doesn't do the trick I'd try some frozen blood worms well fish don't turn those down very often. Also check your water quality, while Bettas are fairly hardy fish poor water quality is often the reason for not eating.

Honey, unless you keep your house in the 75-80 region,he's cold (most likely).

Bowls aren't really suitable for any fish. You need at least 1-2 gallons for a betta...and that has to be changed every 2-3 days.

He might be stressed out from moving fish tanks. Keep on feeding and removing, and after some time he should be eating. If not, ask the pet shop you bought him from what to do.

if you can afford it I would get a 10 gallon set up and put him in with platys, mollys, guppies, neon tetras, or danios. My bettas seem to be happier when they have tank mates and they swim alot more when they are in the tanks as apposed to bowls.

he might be sick. Don't feed him as often. maybe once a day but very little. let him work up a appetite. Try freeze dry bloodworms first.

I'd be depressed if I was kept in a fishbowl too.
