If the offensive player is all alone coming into the zone and the penalty is committed by a defensive player, then the goal is "awarded". But I believe there can't be a defensive player between the shooter and empty net for it to be a freebie. The penalty has to come from behind...

It seems pretty unreal that someone on a great empty net scoring opportunity wouldn't just shot from 90 ft away, but i think the goal is awarded.

It's an automatic goal. The ref points at the net, like he would if a real goal, and calls it a goal. It does get called. Usually for players throwing a stick.
