Dodge City, Kansas
Circa 1876

Matt Dillon, U.S. Marshal was headed for the post office. Once AGAIN he had received a letter posted to
Nat Dillweed, a resident of a neighboring town. As he handed it to the mail clerk, the clerk marked it,(4.) "Return to Sender." On his way back to his office, Festus yelled out to him:"Matthew?! There's a (1.)Soldier Boy awaitin' on you in yer office. If I were you, I would (3)walk.Don't run. He's a real scutter...why...he's a bossin' me around like I'm some private in his dad blamned army....humph!! What a bunch of (3.) Wasted Days and Wasted Nights THAT would be. Why, I'd be plum crazy to join up with the likes of him!!" Matt: "What in the hell are you going on about?! Step aside and I 'll get over there." Matt walked past his old pal and entered the office.

Once inside he felt a gun at his back. "Drop your pants, raise your hands and sing me two verses of 'The Yellow Rose Of Texas,' !" Matt was about to hit him with his elbow when he realized who belonged to the voice. "MORGAN!! You old son-of-a *****, is that you?!" "Sgt. Morgan O'Rourke, at your service, sir!!" The two old friends gave each other a typical male greeting....many slaps of the back, a few punches to the arm and the ever popular head-butt! (They had met in the Civil War....on opposing sides. )

"What brings you to Dodge, Morgan? What happened? Did the army finally give you a dishonorable discharge?!" The Sgt. laughed and gave his old buddy a big hug. "No, you old bas****. I finally retired....I'm a civilian, now." Matt started laughing and replied: "Well (5.) Light My Fire and kiss my ***! You don't say?!" "Hey Matt, is it true what I hear....you and the redhead have broken up?" "Yes, my friend....Kitty and I have gone our separate ways." The Sgt. smiled......"Hmmmmm....met someone else,eh? She must be SOME woman, that's all I've gotta say!" At that moment, that very woman entered the office. Sunshine MacGillicutty took one wanton look at Matt and screamed out her Tarzan yell.....

Sgt. O'Rourke grabbed his chest in total terror!! Matt started laughing. "Morgan ....I would like to introduce you to the love of my life, Sunshine MacGillicutty. SunnyMac, this is an old friend of mine. When O'Rourke gathered his wits, he shook her hand. He looked her up and down, grinned broadly and planted a big kiss on her lips. Sunshine was a bit stunned. "Matt, my good man. It appears that (6.) Lightning Strikes Again. ....first Old Red and now this maniac......you are one lucky man!!" Matt smiled and pulled Sunshine out of his grasp.

James Dupree knew what he had to do in order to get out of the small Appalachian Hills town that he lived in all his life; he joined the Army, one week after he graduated from high school. He really wanted to go to college, but his family couldn’t afford it, and his grades, weren’t good enough for a scholarship. His father Thom was a coal miner who supported five kids on one salary. His mother Millie passed away several years ago from breast cancer. It seemed to all who knew the family that Thom never recovered from Millie’s death. He was drinking steadily now and it was only a matter of time before he too, would die. It was nothing but wasted days and wasted nights, but liquor seemed to dull the sadness that engulfed Thom. He didn’t know what he was going to do when James went off to play soldier boy. Instead of being happy and proud of his eldest son having escaped from the dead end town, Thom was feeling resentment.

James was excited to be going, even though it would mean leaving Doris Sanderson behind. She was his high school sweetheart and everyone, more or less, assumed the two would marry right away. Had the pregnancy test been positive, that’s probably what he would have done. However, it wasn’t, so James felt he should walk don’t run, away from her, before he found himself with a mouth to feed.

As James packed his meager belongs, his brother Glen came into the bedroom and sat down on the lumpy, stained mattress that he called his bed. “I’m really happy for you James and I’ll pray every night that you’ll be safe” he said. James stopped packing and embraced his sixteen year old brother. Suddenly, James wasn’t too sure if he had made the right decision. “Glen, you light the fire in my soul, but I have no choice now, I have to go” he said to his brother. “I’ll miss you a whole lot James” said Glen. “But before you go, there’s something I need to tell you. I will not be returning to school in the fall, because starting Monday, I’ll be working the coal mines with dad.” It was like lightning strikes again, bad things just seemed to follow his family every step if the way. He wished there was some way he could address his luck return to sender, but life wasn’t that easy. Tomorrow, he would board a Grayhound bus and head to the Savanna Army Base, and leave his family and Doris behind, and if he couldn’t cut it as a soldier, there would always be a place for him in the coal mines, right next to his father and brother.
