Generally not. The serpaes and flames may school together though. That instinct is based on body shape in large part.

No tetras school with same breed only. I have neon and serpae tetra in my one tank. They not mixed with each other.( reason is their looks). Flame will school with serpae but not always, it is not commonly seen. There is another problem in keeping neon and serpae together, Because serpae tetra normally nip the fins of neon. It can be avoid by keeping more serpae tetras.(8 and above).

I have 3different types of tetra and they all shawl together and they are all diff sizes so yh i'd say so, but i'm no expert on tetras i only say what goes on in my tank.
