Color Outside The Lines
Spoken:

You can do what society dictates
And live how it confines.
Or you can color outside the lines.
You can color outside the lines.

Reflections of the past.
Another place,
Another time.
When the life
You live was banned.
But you're too young to remember that.

Deep in the Heart of Dixie
An old black man
Was sitting on a bus bench
Outside the Greyhound.
He's got nowhere to go,
But he was wearing his Sunday Suit!
I walk by and say to him
"Hey Old Man, You look nice!
Can I take your picture?"
He nods and smiles,
But the picture never comes out.
That makes me wonder
About the old man's dreams.
Did he ever dream
Of having coffee
With a girl like me
Inside that bus station?
Where was he in '65?
Did he march in Selma?
Or did he get involved?
Or was he left behind?

Reflections of the past.
Another place,
Another time.
When the life
You live was banned.
Are you too young to remember that?

You've got it lucky.
You've got it easy.
You can belly up
To a lunch counter
And "Will there be fries with that?"
Prob---lee.

I thank that old black man
Or some old man for
The fight for the right
To color outside the lines.

You can do what society dictates
And live how it confines.
Or you can color outside the lines.
You can color outside the lines.

You don't have to do
What other people tell you to.
You can broaden their horizons.
You can expand their narrow minds.
And you can color outside the lines.
