He did what every good scientist does when encountering an "outbreak" . They try to locate patient "0", the start of the disease.
They traced it back to the animal facility and upon checking the manifest realized that there was a missing animal but could not figure out exactly which one.
When they made it to the ship that transported the primates, they came across yet another statistic of the contagion and when they inspected his living quarters, they located a picture of a monkey, a monkey that was on the manifest but not in quarantine. So the realized that this was the missing animal they had been looking for.

They researched back and found another guy that was infected who was on a ship. As Sam was inspecting the ship he inspected the guy's sleeping area found a photo of the monkey taped underneath the top bunk.

Someone smuggled the monkey out of Africa, and someone else, a customs agent (I think) bought the monkey and tried to sell it. However, the guy got infected from the monkey, and wound up in Boston Hospital, where he died,
The parties then tried to retrace the dead guy's steps to search for the source of the virus, and found the monkey...as I remember it.
