What you are describing is a CD drive emulator. Usually, you copy the contents of the game CD and save it as an image file, like .iso, .bin and/or .cue. Next, you "mount" the image file on to a virtual CD drive. The CD drive emulator is a software program which tricks the computer in to believing you are running the game CD on your CD drive. Daemon tools is probably the most popular CD drive emulator. The download link is (http://www.filehippo.com/download_daemon_tools/). Please read the notice. Daemon tools is a "free" program, but it comes bundled with an ad toolbar (i.e. adware). However, you do not need to install the toolbar to install Daemon tools. During the installation process, you can select not to install the toolbar. There are other emulator programs some free and others which are not. The free ones are: Alcohol 52% (http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_52__Free_Edition) and Slysoft's Virtual CloneDrive (http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html).

Alcohol 120% is the paid version of Alcohol which has many more features than its free version. Howeve, for your needs, Alcohol 52% is just fine.

All the programs are excellent. My personal preference is for Daemon tools.
