i tried the xp fax console but the set-up is looking for a dial-up modem.

The best thing to do is go to the store and buy a phone adapter for a few bucks that you plug into the phone jack and it has two jacks coming out. Plug your phone into one and run a cord from the othern to your computer. You should have a phone jack and an ethernet jack on your computer. The ethernet is the larger of the two.

You will need a modem in order to fax, unless you use some online fax service.

What the other two posters did not say is that you cannot send a fax using DSL.

I use smartfax.com its an online fax service you can send pdf documents to any fax machine from the comfort of your PC
