SHORT ANSWER NO. THEY ARE INDIVIDUALISTS ON ECONOMIC ISSUES AND COLLECTIVIST ON SOCIAL ISSUES.

A conservative believes the government has absolutely no right regulating the economy or telling multi-national corporations what they can or can't do. However, they believe the government has absolutely every right to restrict people's personal social decisions based on their conservative interpretation of christianity. Today that means opposition to gay marriage and abortion. In the past it meant opposition to women's rights, interracial marriage, invitro fertilization, birth control pills, civil rights for minorities, and abolition of slavery.

Liberals believe in using the government to protect and help the people from corporate abuse, aristocracy, and law of the jungle (big fish eat smaller fish) economics. They believe that by shifting the tax burden to those who can better afford it (the rich) and creating legislation and economic programs that helps workers, consumers, and citizens, we can increase the standard of living, create a stronger middle class, and more economic growth.

In addition, liberals believe in as much social freedom as possible so long as it does not interfere with the rights of others. Today that means support for gay marriage, abortion, and the right to die (for terminally ill patients). In the past it meant the right to birth control bills, interracial marrage, invitro fertilization, and equal rights for women and minorities.

Today, the more liberal party is the Democratic Party and the more conservative party is the Republican Party. However, in the past, the Democratic Party used to have a strong racist/conservative wing in the South. The Republican Party on the other hand used to have a strong radical/progressive/liberal wing in the northeast. Ever since the presidential election of 1964, the liberal North has become increasingly Democrat and the conservative South has become increasingly Republican.

I've never heard that.

I think we do have a mixed economy. We have lots of self-employed people doing their own thing and we have lots of big businesses setting records at the NY Stock Exchange and none to my knowledge designate themselves as liberal or conservative.

They may identify themselves that way when the vote but they didn't wake up and say I'm a conservative and because I'm a conservative I can do this, this and this, but not that.

I don't think you can stereotype them into groups this way. I think many conservatives are conservatives because they don't like homosexuality, abortion, and other such habits that liberals embrace. Too bad there's not a 3rd major party. Moral, green, collective.

No. Conservatives believe in the POWER of the individual. It has nothing to do with whether we believe in teamwork, because we operate within the framework of relationships. Our most sacred relationship is our religion, and we want the government to stay out of it. Our second most sacred relationship is family, and we want the government's social policies to be pro-family. Our third most sacred relationship is our livelihood, and we want the government to keep their hands out of our pockets.

Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, Libs care about how much welfare they are going to get for sitting in their mom's basement.

You're oversimplifying it.

Your average Liberal doesn't believe that.

And we have plenty of cons who think it's perfectly ok to succeed just through the blood, sweat, and tears of those beneath them, that's not individual work.
