I'm a hopeless romantic, and I'm looking for a good romance book to read. Can you suggest one and give me a little synopsis on what the story is about?

"Katherine" by Anya Seton is my all-time favorite.
It's based on a true story from medieval England. In true fairy tale fashion, the king's son and a beautiful commoner fall in love. Unfortunately, in the real world, there is no way they can possibly marry; she's too far beneath his station. However, their lives keep crossing paths and by the time they're both widowed, they can't deny their love any longer...
And that's only halfway through the book. There's lots more romance, heartache, and history to cover before the story ends. I absolutely fell in love with both of the main characters. They're so well drawn that you're going to be rooting for them to have their happy ending the whole way along. It's a great book.

Tryst, by Elswyth Thane.
Takes place during 1930s. A man "spying" in India for Great Britain during wartime passes on, yet doesn't really know what's happening. His childhood home is rented out to a professor and his young daughter. His room, at the top of the stairs, has been locked, and the renters are to stay out.
Of course she gets in and eventually he finds his way back and she senses him. A relationship of sorts develops. It just tugs at you. For some of us, you wish the age difference wasn't so big, but if you can focus on the story, well, it's something that stays with you a good long time. I'm trying to give you a synopsis without giving away too much. There is a problem, however - not an easy book to get hold of.
Other "romance" books I've read lately and enjoyed are Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. It's a bit paranormal, but there's always a nice love story (in the 4 I've read so far.)

I think anything by Daphne DuMurier(sp?) or Elizabeth Goudge falls into my personal best romance books. The good thing is both authors wrote a lot of books so if you chose to read them your romance yen would be well satisfied by quantity and quality.

Aside from Gone with the Wind my favorite romance novel is actual a gothic romance from the 1940's and the title is Dragonwyck by Anya Seton. It is just excellent. It's about a young girl in the 19th century who lives on a farm with her family when her mother's cousin invites one of her daughters to act as a governess for his small child. Amanda is sent and she falls in love with Nicholas but he is married. The wife dies suddenly after an illness and they marry but it's never truly happy because of Nicholas' strange and brooding personality. I suppose it can be compared to Jane Eyre but to me it's better.
The novel was recently re-released. I highly recommend it.
Some current authors that I like are Lisa Kleypsas, Judith McNaught's "Whitney My Love." and Kathleen Woodwiss.

"Lisey's Story" by Stephen King. Partly a ghost story, mostly romance. Great story. I can't say it better than Nora Roberts so here's an excerpt from her review:

The book of psalms....It has love songs and stories you should read it The Byrds used a song from the book of psalms it was called Turn, Turn, Turn.
