I thought employers were meant to be environmentally friendly these days. Should I complain to Green Peace?

Unless you had permission to take the computer, you STOLE company property. That will get you fired almost anywhere. How do you know they don't already have a system to recycle used computers AFTER wiping confidential information?

Recycling or not, judging by the fact you got sacked for it implies you took it without permission. That means it's theft no matter what your justification is.
Greenpeace? What's the point in complaining to them? No one pays a blind bit of notice to them anyway.
