In the 50's we were a relatively homogenous nation with a strong manufacturing base, functioning institutions, healthy middle class, stable family structure, and international prestige.

Today, we have a Third World invasion, gutted manufacturing base, corrupt institutions, dwindling middle class, broken families, and international scorn.

Is this progress?

No, it's not progress, and that is the most eloquent description I've ever seen of the '50s and today. Makes me wonder how we ended up where we are now.

Define better and progress? People get out of marriages when they're unhealthy (sometimes even deadly) - staying in it for the kids is a bunch of crap in some cases - and not having an out is not healthy. In the 50's people just weren't as open about their problems. International prestige or fear? The US and other countries as well for that matter always have their issues and problems - trends come and go - now people just bare all - problems are more out in the open - people aren't afraid to talk about them. There are good and bad things about our society and how it has progressed.
As a woman things are better for me - I went to college and had the opportunity to have the same experience (dorm life etc.) as a man and I was able to get a degree. I can be a professional without being seen as weird. I got to play sports in high school and at the collegiate level. Also - my husband shares the chores and house work with me!

I agree with everthing except the 3rd world invasion part, During the 1950's the US was invading everbody else, even before that, I dont hear them complaining. We still have a healthy middle class, and a stable family structure, just that now its more plagued by the media. International prestige o dont think so, the US has always been bombing other countries (nagasaki and hiroshima, circa 1950) and always going to war so nothing much has changed except we are hated more.

America was always a land of immigrants, so I don't agree with you about the "third world invasion." After all, my starving Irish ancestors were once the "invaders," Other than that, I thoroughly agree with you! We were a better nation back then. We have lost a huge amount of our family stability and our morality. It is our own fault for throwing away so many good, time-honored values.

In a word no. Racism and hatred still exists in America , it's just gone underground and focussed on some different groups. Families are no longer nuclear or extended families. Neighbours no longer know one another and people are too paranoid to get to know their neighbours fearing a predator lurking everywhere. Kids are no longer well mannered, they 're self absorbed and parents have forgotten how to be parents and want to be grupsters or their kids' friends.

Music may have progressed but we didn't have gangster rap crap then or music that was offensive to women calling them inappropriate names.
