Are roaches a type of beetle??

like in the beetle family. I need it for a science project

no. They look similar to beetles but are unrelated. Cockroaches are in an order called Blattodea, and their closest relatives are termites (which are now believed to have evolved from cockroaches themselves). The next closest relatives are mantids.
