The Stratosphere is a very nice 3 star hotel. If you want a slight upgrade go with the Premier Tower, but the World Tower rooms are just fine.

The Stratosphere is the best value hotel on the strip. Some don't like the location, at the North end of the strip. Of course you're not going to walk to every other hotel/casino on the strip. Then again the strip is 4 miles long, you can't walk "conveniently" from ANY hotel on the strip to all of the others.
The Deuce stops right in front of the Stratosphere, it's $5 for a 24 hour pass. You can ride up and down the strip all you want or it takes just a few minutes to ride downtown(where all of the good eats and gambling are)
The 24 hr Deuce pass is also good on any CAT bus so you can actually go anywhere in the valley with your pass..
For all LV trasportaion options, including the free hotel shuttles, check out this site.

For the free hotel shuttles click on >free hotel shuttles >the hotel group you're interested in >then click LV Map "click here" >for all of the hotel shuttle info including pickup locations & times.
The only other 3 star hotel in LV that's "generally" as good a deal as the Stratosphere is the Orleans
http://www.orleanscasino.com >It's one mile West of the Strip on Tropicana, but they have a free shuttle to the center of the strip & over to the Gold Coast which is right next door to the Palms & Rio.

If those are your only 2 choices, I'd choose Stratosphere. It's a nice place, but in a pretty bad location. It IS closer to the strip though, and that's where all the action is. Golden Nugget is downtown, which is a fun place to hang out for a few hours, but not really the best part of Vegas to stay in. If your choices are strictly based on your budget, I'd look into the rates at Luxor, Excalibur, Tropicana, and Imperial Palace. They aren't super nice places by any means, but they are usually pretty cheap and are in far better locations than either Golden Nugget or Strat.

Great question......By the way I was a limo driver in vegas for over a year......The stratosphere sits in the middle,,between "the strip"and "downtown"i would suggest you go to either travelocity.com,or expedia.com and see if you cant book a room at one of the following...ready?
1.paris
2.mgm grand
3.excaliber
4.the mirage(preferrable)
5.bellagio
6.sahara(last choice)
7.tropicana(lots of pools and bikinis)
8.new york new york(has coyote ugly)(lots of elbow rubbing)
9.ceasers palace(a bit pricey)
10.the rio(centrally located)
stay away from!!
1.sams town(too far from anything)
2.the cannery(" ")
3.anything downtown except the golden nugget.
The stratosphere is too far away from stuff to do any thing,,it is a long walk(doesnt seem like it but it is)from there to anything and the area is a bit"shady "at night...just off the main drag(like one block)there are alot of run down apts and seedy hotels and all kinds of distasteful stuff.....also if you go to the downtown area, stay on the main part of "fremont"street,,this area is heavily gaurded and enclosed,,not even a block south of the enclosed area of fremont, there is a 7/11 store where all kinds of "baddies" hang out and there is alot of drug and prostitution activity in that area..down on the strip(the other side of town) the fun(and relative safety)starts at "treasure island"and goes all the way down to the luxor pyramid.....nothing past the pyramid really,so dont waste your time,,,,I know it sounds a bit beneath you right now,,butyou will feel differently when you get there,,,get a bus pass!!!this will save you time and money and the busses run all day and night...it can be hard to find a limo,or taxi at times,,they are not allowed to stop curbside,,,and it is easy to jump a bus for a few blocks and then jump back off again,,with a pass its easy and quick,,without a pass,,about $3.00 each time, plus fumbling with your money to get on.....also I reccomend "playing into"one of the scams that are prevelant there,,,they want to get you into a presentation room to try and sell you timeshares,,,the lure is free shows aand dinners,,,,go ahead, string em along,,listen to the presentation,,spend nothing,,then"VOILA"you walk away with free show and dinner tickets, probably worth over $200.00 and only invested one hour.......use your common sense,,dont keep alot of cash on your person out of doors,,,also when you are leaving the airport,I suggest using a limo,,theyu are about 30 bucks,,but will accomidate you and all your luggage and will take you right to the front door of your hotel and you wont have to wait for a taxi,,,,I worked for "las vegas limosine"maybe you could give them a call and set something up in advance,,,,Im not endorsing them,,but it sure makes things alot easier,,plus,,the limo drivers always have free passes to get into all the best clubs,,,ie;no waiting in line to get in like all the other saps,,be sure to ask your driver for some.......I wish you the best of luck and have alot of fun on your journey.....if you have anymore questions,,my email adress is...olddanishbloodline@yahoo.com
