He was the real deal and was the heir apparent for Williams. It is a tragedy because it destroyed what was destined to be a HOF career. That he came back to play is absolutely remarkable, though he was never the same.

Conigliaro was never going to measure up to Williams; pretty much no one is that good. But had he not been plunked, the 1967 World Series, at least, may have been a lot different.

Can ponder the same thing with Rice and 1975, actually.

he seemed to be heading that way before he got beaned...It was such a shame that we never got to find out....
