to feed the hungry, heal the sick, and house the homeless (things Jesus did speak PLENTY about) but support using the government to restrict social decisions like gay marriage and abortion (things Jesus said nothing about)?
Isn't there a disconnect there? How can christians (specifically conservative christians) be against government intrustion to help the less fortunate, but for government intrusion to restrict social decisions?
HERE'S WHAT I THINK:
Christian conservatives (especially from the South) have a long history of supporting programs that help the poor. That is why they were with the Democratic Party for so long and why they were among the top supporters of FDR's New Deal programs. However, christian conservatives (especially from the South) have also long been conservative on social issues like slavery, women's rights, interracial marriage, invitro fertilization, birth control pills, and today gay marriage and abortion.

Starting in the 1960s, after the national Democratic Party started supporting civil rights for minorities, christian conservatives started leaving the Democratic Party and joining the Republican Party. They joined forces with big business conservatives (like Goldwater and Reagan) in the Republican Party. These guys were extremely conservative on economic issues but only moderates on social issues. More liberterian then conservative.
The marriage between these two different groups is what caused christian conservatives to lose their support for government created programs for the poor and big business conservatives to start to embracing atleast some of the issues christian conservatives strongly support (like abortion and gay marriage).

timm,
The difference is that I'm not a christian. I support helping the less fortunate because that's the way to create a stronger middle class and increase the standard of living in this country.
I oppose religious morality in the government because history has shown that what many religious people considered to be absolutely true (like slavery and opposition to interracial marraige) is no longer considered true in today's society.

Shebola,
Nice that you bring FEMA. I'm not even going to talk about the incompetent fool Bush put to head that agency. FEMA gave out no bid contracts to corporations like Betchell. There was mistake number 1. Mistaken number 2 was providing no oversight. Betchell would charge for empty trailers because they were paid by the trailer. They lied and got away with it most of the time.
A final point I'd like to make is that Betchell didn't actually do any real work. They subcontracted to other local companies and got them to do the job for pennies on the dollar. Betchell would get half the money for simply sending a fax to subcontractor to do the job for them.
Corporations don't exist to do the job for the least amount of money possible. They exist to make the most amount of profit for the least amount of work possible (to keep labor costs down).

These fake christians will give you the excuse that the government shouldn't be giving out welfare, that iits socialist, etc. That'd be fine if they also followed Christ's teachings on the subject. But do they?
Judge for yourself. Last year, the new head of the "Christian Coalition" urged that the organization do just that, and not limit itself to political activities. He was specific: as Christians they ought to be doing the work Christ directed them to do.
He was forced to resign. Why? Because the organizations members didn't like the idea of helping the poor, etc. They only wanted to pursue their political ideology.
So, what's the conclusion? This: these people are not real Christians. They are a political right-wing group that has no interest in helping anyone but themselves and uses religion as a smokescreen. They are certainly NOTfollowers of Christ.

Jesus additionally informed human beings to coach people who to fish so they are in a position to consume for a life-time. in case you supply them a fish they consume for an afternoon. If human beings used the device and not abused the device i think of it could be super. Church's at one ingredient in time could do a good sort of the stuff that government is now doing. no you're able to desire to be rewarded for doing not something. confident i be responsive to that's a double edge sword, in case you're making greater funds it does not equivalent the assist you have been getting.

What are you not getting?
The government is filled with screwballs and beaurocracy.
How do you think they can do anything without spending 4 times too much and taking 10 times too long? Wasn't FEMA enough evidence for you of how the government handles hungry homeless people?
Stop typing and go feed someone. You can do it better, faster, and more satisfactorily to your tastes and demands.
Christians have no problem with this. We feed, clothe and house people with or without the government's help, and we don't go around demanding that everyone help us. We just do it.

The government does a bad job, frankly. It should not be up to others to decide how much or how little I contribute.
Once you give the government a tax, it will never be repealed, even if the original intent has since passed. Why spend so frivolously? Save your money for the most effective contribution possible.

Because they are not communists, I guess.
Conservatives help the poor out of their own pockets.
(Check out who gives to charities. I't not liberals.)
You seem to have a big hang up about Jesus & Christians.
Are you a Preacher?
Or are you just a Bible Thumper like Bill Clinton?
Clinton liked to hug his Bible, when he was in front of cameras.
You are probably a Cult Leader.
Cool!

They're inconsistent.
It's human nature, I guess. It's just like liberals who don't want the government controlling their bedrooms but love the idea of the government controlling their wallet.
