Two expression involving x are said to be equivalent if they yield the same result, whatever the value of x. In this regard, x may be thought as an imaginary object which may take any value you want, but has no given value.

For instance, the expressions 2x and 1+x are not equivalent. Indeed, when x=0, for example, we have 2x=0 while 1+x=1 (it is important to note that two expressions are equivalents only if we get the same result for all the values of x, so getting different results just once is sufficient to prove that they are not equivalent).

But the expressions 7x and 6x+x ARE equivalent because you can replace x by any value and find the same result with both expressions.

If we picture x as an object, the result becomes intuitive:
Having 7 similar objects is equivalent to having 6 objects plus one.

Yes. Because 6x + x = (6 + 1)x = 7x

Yes they are equivalent. Try plugging in a number for X, any number. 7(5) = 35 and 6(5) + 5 = 35. Also all 7x is, is X+X+X+X+X+X+X (X - 7times)
