We just got ours recharged because of a leak, and I’m trying to determine how much we really lost.

It should be stated on the condensor how much freon is to be in the unit. However you take or add depending on the length and size of the line set. Techs will or should have a set of gauges that has a sight glass in it to determine when the system is full along with checkin and adjusting the super heat.

the name plate on the condesing unit or packaged unit will let you know the capacity. but if its a split unit the lenght of the line sets would add more "freon".
I hope the tech found the leak and repaird it or he'll be back and handing you another bill

There is no set answer. It is like car engines. The oil and water capacities can be different year to year and from manufacturer to manufacturer.
