I've tried several types of pills and all make me frequently nauseous. I've been on ortho-tri-lo for a year and even that makes me nauseous. I always feel the worse right after the 3rd pill of the new pack, but many times throughout the month as well. I take the pill at night with food, but nothing seems to help. I don't know what other kind of pills will help since I'm already on a low dose kind. I've tried the shot, but gained too much weight on it, plus I don't want to deal with the calcium loss in my bones. I'm hesitant to try the ring or patch because I'd rather know I took the pill and was protected. So, any advice on the nausea? Any suggestions on what other kinds I would try with minimal side effects? Thanks!

I do take it with food and at night, and I have been completely regular.

The reason for the nausea is because of the hormones. I would recommend trying to take it with food such as peanut butter (because this is good at helping to keep protein levels so that nausea can be kept to a minimum-I learned this thing about eating peanut butter and then taking the pill 15 minutes lafter from a medical assistant that used to work for my gynecologist) to coat your stomach.

Another option is to change the time of day that you take the pill. You may want to try taking it at night such as before you go to bed to see if that helps.

If that doesn't I would recommend getting in touch with your dr to let them know what is going on. They may check your electrolyte levels too because sometimes being low on electrolytes can be a sign of dehydration and this can cause nausea.

Absolutely, nauseau and vomiting are a side effect of the pill. Since you just started, you probably already know to use other birth control, right? But if you take your pill and then throw it up, obviously it isnt going to work. If it keeps up, call your doctor, there are things they can give if the vomiting is bad. You can also try ginger - like ginger ale or ginger tea or just ginger root. or flat coke is good. Also try to eat some crackers, dont let your stomack get empty, keep some by your bedside if you find you are nauseous or lightheaded when you get up, eat a little before you rise from bed. The good news is that this will pass eventually and some people find that it helps to take their pill at night - then they are able to sleep through these symptoms . If they do persist though, you need to call your doctor.

I have the same side effects and I even had some hair loss with one pill. The only thing I found that helps a little is to drink it with milk and keep drinking a lot of milk throughout the day.
the hormones affect me badly too, but I know it is still 100% better than being pregnant.

The answer given is a great one. I would also try taking it at dinner time with a full meal. I would make sure that your diet is balanced. Is your cycle normal? Are you having headaches with the nausea? If so, it could be causing migraines. I would try saltine crackers and ginger snap cookies also. They help with nausea. Call your doctor if it continues. I would also track your sympotms in a notebook, so you can see if there is a pattern. I hope you figure it out.
