Each edge of the cube is made of five cubes. Consider the front. The top and bottom edges are each five cubes. The side edges are three additional cubes each (because the corners were already counted with the top and bottom). Therefore each face is 16 cubes. So you have 16 cubes on the front and sixteen on the back, for 32, and four edges of 3 cubes each (again, the corners are already counted) for 12 cubes, for a total of 44 cubes.

You can divide 44 cubes in half and get 22 cubes each. The best way to do it is to separate the front and back so that two of the side edges go with the front face and two go with the back face. Then each half will have 16 cubes on the front and 2 x 3 cubes on the attached side edges = 22.
