I have a new boss. Last night I emailed him that I was meeting with my old boss today (not the guy New Boss replaced, but someone I worked for a long time ago in an entirely different job) to pursue some business for our company. Old Boss is very wealthy, powerful and a well known name in our town. New Boss, who is usually very email-chatty, never replied and hasn't emailed me all day. He also never asked how the meeting went - unusual for him. New Boss is nice, but pretty young, and has never managed my position before. I'm thinking he's either jealous of Old Boss, suspicious that I'm hitting Old Boss up for a job (I'm not - he was an ogre to work for), or just feels weird that I worked for a heavy hitter like that and I may be judging him unfavorably in comparison. Or am I reading way too much into it and need to chill? New Boss doesn't seem to be petty or insecure, but today felt weird. Thoughts?

Best bet, act like nothing is wrong. Make certain you work politely and professionally. Even if NB was in fact concerned/jealous, it will fade. You weren't gossiping, so your actions do not need to be explained or excused.

What!! He didn't email you back??!! Hint hint.
Seriously, any time I run into a situation like this whether you have gotten a vibe or you think it may just be in your head, it is best to approach new boss and let him know that you were looking over what you emailed him and realized that it could be taken wrong. We tend to leave details out of emails so our conversations are more vague than in person. Re-explain in person which old boss you are meeting and that its to bring in money for the CO. Make sure there is nothing weird and you just might earn his respect for being considerate enough to double check. And NO it is not brown nosing. This works in any kind of a relationship. Anyone Man enough to make sure everything is OK is an asset. If there are weird feelings on his part, he may notice your sharp instincts. Or you could just worry about until he e-mails you back and try to decipher those emails!

You're being a bit insecure. NB may just be busy, or may indeed be feeling jealous or insecure - too soon to say.

If it still feels weird after a day or two, approach NB and say something like, "It's been chilly the last few days. Did my e-mail about seeing OB for lunch upset you? You know I really enjoy working for you and I'm not going anywhere - just visiting with an old friend."

Good luck.

Maybe new boss was too busy to check his e-mail, or maybe he felt it didn't need a reply.
I think you ARE being a little paranoid...just forget about it.
