Marriage isn't bad - but people sure can be. Human nature, along with stubbornness, pride and general meanness sure make a marriage go south.

I've been married for over 21 years. Seen the good, bad and ugly of it all. But, we always at least attempt to resolve issues.

Marriage should not be rushed into - it is a lifetime commitment and should be treated as such. During the courtship, one should observe how the other lives as to handling finances, personal grooming/hygiene, temper - are they a procrastinator, does she always want him to buy stuff for her, does he prefer to stay under the hood of his car than take her to the movies?

Also, living together or trial marriages don't work. Over 75% of married couples who lived together before marriage end up divorced. People can find out plenty about each other just by spending quality time, communicating and being observant.

I dont think marriage, in and of itself, is the problem; it is the questionable expectations that are the problem. I have heard women complain that their husbands hadn't changed, or grown up, and i have heard men complain that their wives seemed to change a lot, or too much , particularly after getting a new home or after having a baby. Too much is focused upon the wedding reception, and too little is focused on what happens after the honeymoon.

I don't think marriage IS bad. It is great for some, maybe not me but I know others who have been married 30+ years. Not everyone is cut out to be married, not everyone is cut out to be single. We just need to recognize what type we are and stop raising our children to think marriage is the cureall for everything. It's not, sometimes it CAN be the disease itself.
