Redoing my kitchen and need the pipeline either just moved or shortened. I'm told that plumbers do that, any other profession? Any idea of cost? It seems like a relatively small job.

Don't know if I gave the impression that I was going to try to "do it myself", not that at all. Want to know what professional is the best bet and if you are that type of professional cost.

You can hire a plumber, Heating, Cooling, and Ventilation (HVAC) Company or contact your natural gas company, they may offer HVAC services. The cost varies on job, time and material and the company's labor rates.

A Journeyman plumber or a Journeyman pipefitter are both
qualified to do the job. plumbers are more easly located near
you for home repair and the pipefitters are more in factory
related piping systems. They both pay well though. Gas lines
are not recomended for do-it-yourself people due to state
codes and insurance. If your house cought fire because of an
error in your gas or electrical. The inspectors would want to
know who did the work. if and when you put your house up for
sale inspection is inevedable and any violations would have to be corrected before the sale. I know times are hard right
now and doing yourself may sound cheaper, but by the time
you rent the tools and the supply's needed, your going to be
spending the same amount. so save your back for hanging
the cabinets. Hire a" licensed" contractor .no fly-night person.

Yes plumbers do that, but it's not usually a difficult job. And plumbers cost big bucks! If you're not comfortable with doing the job yourself, I'd recommend finding a professional handyman. Their fees are usually considerably lower. You just want the job to be done properly and safely. To do it yourself, all you'll need is a drill to make a new hole where you want the pipe to enter, 2 pipe wrenches, some pipe dope to seal the threads and of course the right lengths of pipe. Stores like Home Depot & Lowe's have an excellent selection of iron pipe in various lengths which can accomodate just about any job.

It's not clear if you mean the vent pipe or the gas supply piping. Gas supply piping certainly is usually done by a plumber but you can do it yourself in most areas. Talk to you building inspection office to find out. Vent piping is usually done by a HVAC outfit. You may find a handyman that can do this small job for you.

Some areas I have worked in required a separate gas fitters license to do the work or required a master gas fitters license to stand for inspection. Most all plumbing and hvac shops have licensed employees.

You can call your gas company. They may be willing to do it if it's that simple, but chances are they'll direct you to contact a licensed plumber.

Just remember, most home gas explosions were caused by someone that didn't know how
