River speed is affected by elevation and channel width and depth. A young river is going to have a higher elevation and a narrow, shallow channel. Over time, the source will be worn down and the channel will widen and deepen and the channel bed is worn away.

see there are different densities in water and slowly water loses energy and water slow downs and create curves in it paths then river get slower and slower.
the young river is fast and goes straight, the mature has curves and the old river is real slow and has lost enegy and you will find alot of rocks down there
