Our numeric system is positional. That means the position of a digit indicates it's value. The first position indicates the numeric value of the number base (10 in this case) raised to the zero power (10^0), the second place, 10^1, the third, 10^2, etc.
1,234,567,890.

Starting from the right-most digit and moving left...
0..... units 10^0)
9..... tens 10^1.................9x10... ninety
8..... hundreds 10 ^2.......8x100.. eight hundred
,
7..... thousands 10^3......7x1000... seven thousand
6 .... ten thousands 10^4.....6x10000... sixty thousand
5 .... hundred thousands 10^5 .... 5x100000... five hundred thousand
,
4 .... millions 10^6... 4x1000000... four millioni
3 .... ten millions 10^7.... 3x100000000.... thirty million
2 .... hundred millions 10^8... 2x100000000... two hundred million
,
1 .... billions 10^9,,1*1000000000... One billioin

So the number written above is
one billion, two hundred thirty-four million, five hundred sixty-seven thousand, eight hundred ninety.
It takes 1000 units to make a thousand
It takes 1000 thousands to make a million
It takes 1000 millions to make a billion.
It takes 1000 billions to make a trillion
It takes 1000 trillions to make a quadrillion
It takes 1000 quadrillions to make a quintillion
There are also sextillions, septillions, octillions... And the are others, but when you get up over a trillion, most people just use scientific notation. 10^9 is shorter than writing a billion.
